Bangkok ~ Night Markets

I strongly recommend everyone who travels to Bangkok to pay a visit to its night market as the night market is the cultural heart of Thailand.

You could find varieties of products at lower price and lots of delicious local street foods.


Recommended night markets:

1) Asiatique The Riverfront (Modern night market)
   
The largest night market in Thailand, located beside the longest river in Bangkok, Chao Praya River.

Styled in multiple classic huge old warehouses, this place was formally known as the East Asiatic Company Limited which was one of the active trading warehouses in the colonial period supplying teak wood to the world. 


It has 1,500 shops and 40 restaurants and there is also a beautiful 300 meter long riverfront promenade along the Chao Praya River. 

The entire area is divided into four main areas which are 
             (i) Charoenkrung district
            (ii) Town Square district 
           (iii) Factory district 
           (iv) Waterfront district

Spacious, clean and carries a very large selection for shopping, food & beverage and entertainment.

Shopping: You could find all sorts of items being sold such as handicraft, decorative items, clothes, souvenirs, shoes, accessories to some of the oddest items. 

Food: There is a local food court which carries a lot of the popular Thai dishes. If you wish to try other foods, there are over 40 restaurants ranging from fast food, international food, and cafe style to fine dining.


Entertainment: Muay Thai Live Show, Calypso Cabaret, Joe Louis Theatre Puppet Show and the Riverfront Pathway. Apart from that, sometimes there are concerts, festivals and New Year's countdown celebration held at Asiatique.


How to get here:
1) by BTS skytrain to Saphan Taksin station. Then take free boat to Asiatique The Riverfront.

2) Srinakarin Train Market (Talad Rot Fai)

Srinakarin Train Market was once an open-air bazaar located beside an abandoned railway track behind Chatuchak market. However, the Train Market was forced to relocate to Srinakarin Road (a large open space behind Seacon Square) since June 2013 due to resumption of land.

Although the railway track is no longer around the market but it is still able to maintain its RETRO and VINTAGE characters by rebuilding it in a warehouse style market. Instead of traditional small stalls, the vendors transform their Classic Volkswagen bugs and vans into mobile stalls.

It has become another popular hangout place for young Thais.

The Train Market is split into 3 zones:
(i) weekend market : like a flea market (outdoor) : it consists of food stalls and clothing stalls, vintage antique furnishings and appliances stalls, opens from Friday to Sunday, 5pm to 12am.
(ii) the Plaza : "open door" with no air-conditioning (indoor) : variety of shops, opens from Tuesday to Sunday, 3pm to 11pm.
(iii) restaurants section : lines up from the entrance of the main road, pubs, cafes, restaurants

How to get here:
1) by taxi
2) by BTS skytrain to Udom Suk station
     (i) head toward Exit 5 and look for Udom Suk Road, turn left and walk for around 3 minutes , take song-thaew to Talad Rot Fai (takes about
          15 minutes, Thai Baht 8 per person), drop off at Paradise Park opposite Seacon Square.
     (ii) take a taxi ride to Talad Rot Fai (around Thai Baht 70).
3) by airport link to Hua Mak station
     (i) take bus number 207 from either Hua Mak station or all the way from Lamsalee / Ramkamhaeng intersection. The bus takes 
             you straight to Seacon Square and the Train Market.
     (ii) take a taxi ride to Talad Rot Fai.

3) Silom (Patpong) Night Market

Silom Road's night market is also known as Patpong night market.

It is one of the favorite places for the local Expat community and tourists as Patpong is well-known for its "adult entertainment" scene - a place of clubs, go-go bars and other various night time adult activities.

Shopping: clothes, handicrafts, bags and fake brand names goods at cheap prices
* Be sure to bargain here. Most street traders will charge higher prices if they know you are a tourist.

The market opens from 6pm to 1am.

1) by BTS skytrain to Sala Daeng station

4) Siam Square Night Market

Siam Square night market is a famous night market among tourists and local teenagers and working adults. It is in a nearly perfect spot since it is located in front of Siam Paragon, nearby the Siam BTS station.

* Siam area is ideally situated in the heart of Bangkok where a large number of high-end shopping malls and a great number of good restaurants abound in this area.

Shopping: Clothes, accessories, bags, ornaments.

How to get here:
1) by BTS skytrain to Siam station. Head toward Siam Square at the exit.

5) Saphan Phut (Memorial Bridge) Night Market

A very local style Bangkok night market filled with young Thais. You could observe the authentic youth culture of Thailand here.

There are a whole stretch of young artists painting, drawing and sketching, and henna tattoos. While a lot of the second hand clothing and accessories caters towards youth, there is still a lot of different stalls to be discovered.

Operating hour: Tuesday to Sunday (8pm to 1am)

1) by BTS skytrain to Saphan Taksin station, Exit 2. Take Chao Phraya Express Boat to Memorial Bridge Pier
2) by BTS skytrain to National Stadium station, Exit 2. Take bus no. 73 or taxi to Pak Klong Talad.
3) by taxi.

6) Jatuchak / Chatuchak Market

Chatuchak market is one of world's largest weekend market which divided into 27 sections, contains more than 15,000 stalls, selling all types of goods ranging from clothes, antiques, souvenirs, wooden furniture, etc. Similar products stalls are co-located together.

It has become the most famous weekend market in Bangkok for locals as well as tourists.

Operating hour: 6am to 6 pm
Plants & Flower: Wednesday and Thursday
Wholesale day: Friday
Miscellaneous: Saturday and Sunday

How to get here:
1) by BTS Skytrain to Mochit station. Follow the sign board (Exit 2) to the market. It is located at the right hand side of the street, behind the Chatuchak Park.
2) by MRT (north line) to Chatuchak Park station / Kamphaenphetch station.
3) by taxi.

7) Jatuchak Green

Jatuchak Green is a relatively small night market, which is around 1/5 of the Chatuchak Weekend Market. It consists of about 150 stalls. Mostly visited by young Thais.

This market will be typically busy during Saturday. You may visit here after visited Chatuchak Weekend Market in the morning.

Operating hour: 10am to 10pm

1) by BTS Skytrain to Mo Chit station
2) by MRT (north line) to Chatuchak Park station / Kamphaenphetch station
