Bangkok ~ Pattaya Attractions Part 2: Buddha and Temples


Pattaya city is a popular weekend getaway for locals and tourists. It is located at the Eastern Gulf Coast of Thailand and it is about 150km away from southeast of Bangkok. The travel time is around 2 hours from Bangkok.

Pattaya’s main attraction is its red-light district areas (i.e. go-go bars and beer bars). Its beaches may not be the main reason for tourists to visit this city as the beaches are not as clean as other cities'. Nevertheless, there are some sightseeing places that are worth to explore.

Part 2: Pattaya Buddha

Buddha:

1) Wat Phra Khao Yai (“Big Buddha Hill”) (South Pattaya)


This temple was built in the 1940s, the oldest temple in Pattaya. It is located on the top of Phratumnak Hill which is laid between Pattaya and Jomtien Beach. The temple is famous for its 18-meter tall Buddha, the biggest Buddha statue in Pattaya.


How to get there:
Location: Khao Phratamnak, near Wang Sam Sien, Nong Pla Lai, South Pattaya, Banglamung, Chonburi




2) Sanctuary of Truth (North Pattaya)


It is also known as Prasat Satchatham. This architecture is located at the northern part of Pattaya. Satchatham Temple is a 105 meter-high wooden temple, located by the sea. The beauty of the Temple is elaborated through wood dwellings and woodcarvings.

It is considered an exotic and imposing architectural work of art of the century, embellishing with artwork and woodcarvings which reflects the intellect and spirit of the Eastern civilization and art.


How to get there?

On Wong Phra Chan Beach, 3 km from North Pattaya. 

If you are driving from Naklua Rd., turn into Soi 12 and drive towards the end of the Soi where there is a large entrance towards the Temple on the right.

3) Wat Yansangwararam (South Pattaya)


This park-like temple is vast, scenic and tranquil. It consists of a pagoda containing the Buddha's relics and several beautiful buildings built in international architectural styles such as Chinese, Indian, Swiss, and etc. 

Collections of priceless antiques and works of art from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong are also on display here.



How to get there?

Located 12 km south of Pattaya and 3 km from Nong Nooch Tropical Garden.

It can be reached by turning left from Sukhumvit Rd. at km 160 marker.

Opening Hours: Daily from 08.00 am. - 05.00 pm

Admission Fee: THB50 

Dress code: Both women and men should have shoulders covered and wear long pants or skirts.




 4) Khao Chi Chan (“Buddha Mountain”)


This Buddha image in the maravijaya position is 130 metres high (from the base to the topknot) and 70 metres wide (from knee to knee). The art style is the mixture of Sukhothai and Lanna arts. Inside the Buddha image, relics of the Buddha are enshrined.


How to get there?
Mount Chi Chan is on the same route to Wat (temple) Yannasangwararam.


From Sukhumvit Rd. from Bangkok direction, take the left turn at km 160 marker which goes towards Wat Yansangvararam, turn right and continue about 5 km.

There is a direction sign indicating a left turn to Wihan Sian. Pass the Winhan Sian, continue 3 km from there.

How to go to Pattaya from Bangkok?


1) Taxi

       - Official fare: THB1500 excludes expressway fees (around THB600)


2) Air-conditional Buses


(i) Eastern Bus Terminal
       - Is located adjacent to the Ekkamai BTS station on Sukhumvit Road at Soi 63 (Soi Ekkamai)
       - Frequency: depart every 30 minutes between 05:20 and 23:20
       - Fare: TBH117

(ii) Northern Bus Terminal 
       - Is located at Mochit
       - Frequency: depart every 30 minutes between 05:30 and 22:00
       - Fare: THB117

(iii) Southern Bus Terminal
       - Is located at Sai Tai Mai (nearby Khao San Road area) - take a 511 bus on Rachdamnoen Road 
          headed across the river and get off at the end of the line.
       - Frequency: depart at 05:30, 08:30, 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:30

(iv) Suvarnabhumi Airport
       - Look for “Suvarnabhumi – Pattaya” counter (Roong Reuang Coach Co Ltd)
       - Board the bus at Level 1 Gate 7-8, counter opens at 7:00 and end at 22:00
       - Frequency: depart every hour
       - Fare: THB134 per person

(v) Don Mueang Airport
       - Look for “Don Mueang – Mo Chit Bus” signage, take the A1 bus
       - Fare: THB30 per person
       - Then, follow Northern Bus Terminal above
       - Fare: THB117 per person


3) Mini Van

       - Offered by Travel agencies and hotels around Bangkok.
       - Hotel pick up service available.
       - Fare: around THB400 per person


4) Train

       - There is a third class train from Hualamphong Station and it travels during weekdays to Pattaya.
       - Frequency: depart at 6:50am, need 3 hours to arrive Pattaya
       - Fare: THB31 per person

  1. Buddha and Temples indeed are the best Pattaya attractions in town. If you are going for Tours pattaya then these two are the go to locations. I would love to visit this place really soon, good share.
